Welcome to American Motors Day for our 115th episode of Coffee Walk!
I think my team unearthed two of the best, rarest, finest and coolest American Motors cars ever built and I can't wait to hear what y'all think about them!
If you could only take 1 rip (a hell of a choice to make, I know), which car would you choose and why? The 1969 MC AMX SS (Jimmy Walker car) OR the 1973 Javelin AMX- Paul Cardin Edition?

  • 11 years ago I bought a rough 73 pierre cardin javelin. I had wanted one since I was 16. It took me 6 years to restore it, parts were hard to find. I took that car down to the shell and worked every single part of it. It will one day be my sons car (when i'm dead).

  • I was in the states in 69 and 70 and in my recollection no body would be seen dead in a Javelin, thinking it was because it was American Motors kinda old mans cars ,but really appreciated some50 odd years later .

  • I have a 1973 Pierre Cardin javelin AMX, paint code F3 (fresh plum metallic), 401, 4sp, 3:91 posi with 28,000 orginal miles. Based on the Pierre Cardin registry its the only one registered with this exact configuration. It's been sitting in a climate controlled garage just waiting to be restored since the late 80's. Seeing videos like this get me take me back, to street racing, and who could leave the longest burnouts.

  • I owned many cars in my 70 years. The best of all of them was my 1972 Javelin AMX 401,4speed in Jolly Green. I bought it new in 1972 and traded it for a 1986 Mustang GT EFI. My AMC lasted more than 175,000 miles. Original engine and transmission. I drove it normally with only occasional bursts of speed. It was serviced 100%. I really miss that car.

  • I still own my 1973 Javelin AMX, that was ordered the first week of March 1973, and came in on a transport, March 30, 1973. I ordered it with the 401 Go Package, along with the Bog Warner 4 speed, and optional 3.91 rear gears . According to Eddie Stakes, at Planet Houston, only around 20% or so, of all Javelin AMX'S ordered from 1971 to 1973, came with the functional cowl induction hood, no 1974 Javelin AMX'S could be ordered with it. The cowl induction hood worked so well, that the Javelin AMX's that did have it, could expect another 15 to 18 horsepower gain from it according to an early AMC memo. Along with that, I ordered the color Cordoba Brown, with the gold, fade to black hood T stripe. Front under bumper spoiler, black interior, floor shift console, inside hood release, power steering, tinted glass all windows, light group, body side scuff molding and the 4 speaker, AM FM stereo radio. The only changes to the AMX I have done since new was, the addition of the 1970 AMC Rebel Machine intake manifold, and to go to a one inch front sway bar, with the addition of a 1/2 inch rear sway bar. The rear axles two single, 3/16 inch wide key way's were enlarged to a 1/4 inch key way, with the addition of a second 1/4 inch key way, 180 deg. opposite for axel strength. AMC did the best that they could with what little money they had. To borrow one of AMC'S early advertising statements of: If you had to compete against G.M., Ford and Chrysler, what would you do? This is exactly what little AMC did at the time, to build different, fast and really good performance cars.

  • Dennis I didn't quite understand your numbers so wanted to clarify. You mentioned 2,875 1973 Javelin AMX's with the Pierre Cardin interior were made, of those about 10% were 401 cars so thought that means 287 were 401 Pierre Cardin cars? You then something about 10% of those were what? Curious since my Dad had a 401 automatic with the Pierre Cardin interior in 1978

  • Nice rides. Like a Paul Zindel book. I never Loved Your Mind. The extra work AMC put into winning Trans Am and Muscle Car sales was evident with the 390 and 401. Untill you steer them. Thankfully, these four years cars were terrific to look at and its Hornet based foundation saved tge marque till Mopar took over. Much love for the show. Well done on keeping history Straight and Fresh. Uncle Sam wants and needs creeds like these.

  • Dennis, thank you for saving those two rare cars, I owned one of the 52 cars and would still own it, but, life got in the way. Those AMX's also came with no rear seat and an aluminum hood. they were originally 1968 cars, but the factory wanted us to keep racing them so they sent us new front fenders, dashboard and seats in 1969, 1970, and 1972 to keep them current. It was the best race car I ever owned AND YES, IT WAS BADASS

  • My Dad (RIP) was a co-owner of an AMC dealership that was the oldest one in the nation. It was originally Nash, AMC when they merged with Hudson. I grew up in a GM city (Flint, Mi.), so suffered a lot of 'slings and arrows' as a kid cause we always drove Nash/AMC cars. Another forgotten classic was the Nash Healy, and I remember driving a 'Metropolitan' when I worked for my Dad while in high school.

  • The 1973 Javelin AMX was my first new car. It was black with a white vinyl top. It was powered with the 401 and was automatic. I had the Pierre Cardin interior and the go package. The Go package included a aluminum swirl dashboard. I bought from a dealer on Old Bridge Rd in East Brunswick, NJ. I paid a bit over $4200 for it. That was a lot of money back then. A week off the showroom floor I was at Raceway Park and I believe it did a 14.2. American Motors was using the Torqueflight 727 for the autos. It did not stay stock. The hard park was finding parts. Endlebrock single plane-850 Holley-Hooker headers which fit like crap-Crane cam-etc. At one point I had a set of heads done by Booth-Arons fitting big block Chevy valves and some porting. Later on I had a roll cage and a 4 leave-link suspension. Unfortunately in 80 it took a walk. I had also picked up a 73 360 AMX in Big Bad Blue with a 4 speed. I didn't like the 360 and the clutch linkage was a nightmare. I also had a few Gremlin-Xs with 304s. If you were able to find a Trams-AM block, it did not have the size cast on the side. It could be bored out to 401. You could drop a 401 into a Gremlin and nobody could tell. In fact a Jeep racer ended up buying my Booth-Arons heads. 1973 was the last year AMC actually mattered. The 74 401 had different heads and wasn't quite the same. The 75 AMX was a joke based on a Hornet. Just like the Nova based GTO I think came out the same year. That is a beautiful AMX. The only thing I would question is the pin strip on the side. AMC had a thicker side strip but it could not be ordered with a vinyl top. Seeing this car makes me wish I still had mine as my toy to play with in my old age.
